How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω Episode 9 Review

Once you get past the first part of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 9, it turns into a pretty satisfying anime episode. The opening few scenes with Horn and the Holy Grail were just unnecessary. Really, you could’ve cut out a chunk of the dialogue and still got the point across.

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω Episode 8 Review

What do you think of what went on in episode 9?

For the most part I’m pretty happy with what was presented to us here in episode 9. I’ll cover the part I brought up in the opening paragraph in my section on what I thought the anime got wrong. I do think that Horn’s decision here was a good recovery for her. I was wondering how she would be treated after running away when Diablo, Lumachina and everyone else was taken into custody by the church.

Horn’s attempted rescue even helped pave the way for Diablo to jump into action. That by itself is a positive. The more we see of Diablo the better.

As far as how the story goes in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 9 is concerned, nothing really surprised me. Lumachina’s reaction to Diablo at the end was predictable. Lumachina already views Diablo as “god” so his “justice” is going to be accepted. Diablo didn’t actually intend to kill anyone, but he just might have to.

What did How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 9 get right?

I’ve already mentioned it, but Horn’s recovery is a highlight. Diablo’s group has such a positive vibe to it I would hate for it to be ruined by the decision of one new member. Horn putting on the collar and showing up to rescue everyone really saved the day.

Another highlight of the episode is the lack of fanservice. I’ve been highly critical of the amount and level of fanservice in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω. In episode 9, there really wasn’t much at all. The fanservice that was present was not nearly as provocative as what has been shown previously. I could actually sit back and enjoy watching the episode for what it was. That was refreshing.

Horn in particular was fun to watch. Her new ability “Charm” forced her to act innocent and naive. Doing so made her sick to her stomach but it was the only way to infiltrate the floating cathedral. I liked watching her having to completely change her personality in order to save her friends.

What did episode 9 get wrong?

I did not need to know that Horn relieved herself in the Holy Grail and that the Grail considered it to be an offering. That was just nasty. There might be a small segment of the audience that enjoys that kind of stuff, but they don’t need to be encouraged.

The fanservice present in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω may be in bad taste, but this was just stomach churning. I can only imagine the conversations on adding this scene into the anime. “I know what we’ll do! We’ll have Horn piss in the Holy Grail and have the Grail consume it! That’ll catch people’s attention!” No thanks.

The other part of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω that bothered me was how easy Horn fell wounded. I get that the paladin that took down Horn was good enough to last against Diablo, but it felt like it was a little too soon. She jumped up 60 levels by putting on the collar and becoming Diablo’s servant. The least episode 9 could’ve done was let her defeat an enemy or two.

Is How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 9 worth watching?

Like all of the other episodes in this anime, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 9 does something that keeps me from giving a full endorsement. This time it’s a little bit different. I can’t endorse episode 9 because it decided to be distasteful in a completely different way. The fanservice is not at fault this time.

I find myself in the same situation that I have in other parts of this season. Hopefully we’ll get an episode next week that will cut out all of the other stuff and let us focus on some pretty exciting action. Diablo and Lumachina now have Europa, the God of Destruction, on their backs. Surely How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω can’t mess this up.

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 10 preview

The title of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω episode 10 is “Pretend God.” It’s all hands on deck for the fight against Europa. Diablo will also pull out a spell called “Light and Dark composite magic: Annihilation Sphere.” I’m looking forward to seeing what it can do. I’m going to guess that it will be more impressive than White Nova. I’m actually looking forward to this episode.

Now go watch some anime!
