Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 12 Review

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 12 - Yuji Itadori

There’s no humor in this episode of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 11 Review

If you remember from the previous episode, Yuji Itadori had just arrived at Junpei’s school right as Junpei was in the process of killing the ringleader of the bullies. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 12 picks up right where episode 11 left off. Itadori begins his fight with Junpei while we also see a flashback showing us that Nanami told Itadori not to go.

This anime episode really makes Yuji Itadori into one of the most lovable protagonists out there. After fighting for a little while, Junpei and Itadori continue their argument over Junpei’s actions when out of nowhere Itadori lowers his guard. Itadori takes the time to listen to what happened and immediately ceases hostilities with the social outcast.

When Mahito shows up and turns Junpei into one of his human weapons, Itadori channels his inner Gon Freecss and threatens the curse. While Jujutsu Kaisen didn’t have the same amount of time building up this moment that Hunter X Hunter did for Gon and Pitou, the intensity of the moment comes close to matching.

The reason why I think Jujutsu Kaisen was able to pull this off is because of how good of a job it’s done with building up Itadori’s character as a strong and friendly character. He’s been an entertaining goof from the start of the anime. Like any good protagonist, he’s more concerned with others well being instead of his own. All of his strengths and abilities are used in order to protect others.

Itadori’s likeable nature and kind spirit make him easy to get behind. When his nature gets him into a situation where he has to watch a friend be manipulated and die, it’s too much. Mahito is able to pull out an emotion we haven’t seen from Itadori to date, his rage.

Besides watching Itadori go crazy with rage, Jujutsu Kaisen gives us a couple other moments that I find interesting. First, during the fight between Mahito and Itadori, Mahito tries to transform Itadori’s soul. As we all know, Sukuna is in there with Itadori and he doesn’t appreciate Mahito’s actions.

Earlier in the episode, when Itadori asked for Sukuna’s help, both Sukuna and Mahito ridiculed him. Itadori had to come to the realization that Sukuna is a cursed spirit just like Mahito. Sukuna doesn’t want to do what’s right, he’s of the same mindset as other curses.

Because of this shared moment of ridicule, Sukuna tells Mahito that he’s going to overlook Mahito’s actions for once. If he tries to touch Sukuna’s soul again then he will pay. From the look on Mahito’s face he understands that he’s no match for Sukuna and agrees. The whole interaction felt like an overconfident puppy challenging the alpha male only to quickly realize he’s in over his head.

Obviously the other interesting revelation in this anime episode is that Itadori can injure Mahito. Previously, in his fight with Kento Nanami, Mahito showed himself to be impervious to normal attacks because as long as they didn’t reach his soul he could reform his body with ease. Intentionally or not, Itadori’s punches attacked Mahito’s soul.

When you add this to the fact that Mahito can’t use his Idle Transfiguration on Itadori, Itadori is the prime candidate to take down the curse. Actually doing that is a completely different thing. Itadori might be determined and full of rage toward Mahito, but Mahito’s ability to transform his body into anything makes him a difficult opponent.

Is Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 12 Worth Watching?

Yes. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 12 is worth watching. If you’re a fan of anime and have any familiarity with the moment from Hunter X Hunter that I mentioned earlier, you’ll realize that this is probably one of the best episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen so far. If you’re unfamiliar with that moment, what are you doing? Go watch Hunter X Hunter!

I really enjoyed watching this anime episode despite the obvious difficulty in watching Junpei die. His story is tragic and you hoped that he would find happiness with his mom after they met Itadori but that was not to be. Not every story can have a happy ending. Hopefully Yuji Itadori’s does.

Now go watch some anime!
