That was a close call!
Jujutsu Kaisen episode 13 picks up from where episode 12 left things. Yuuji Itadori and Kento Nanami are face-to-face with Mahito in the courtyard of the school where Junpei went to kill his bully. The two jujutsu sorcerers plan to have Nanami immobilize Mahito while Itadori finishes off the curse.
What comes next is a pretty exciting exchange of blows. Mahito’s ability to change his shape is not something that’s easy to deal with. Itadori and Nanami have to be on the lookout for Mahito creating limbs out of nowhere. Mahito is treating the entire fight like one big opportunity to test out his abilities so he’s perfectly fine with coming up with a variety of attacks.
Mahito’s strategy for the fight is to kill Nanami first and then deal with Itadori. This leads Mahito to pull out three more transfigured humans to keep Itadori occupied. This allows us to watch as Itadori crosses a boundary that he had previously said he didn’t want to cross.
The transfigured humans are still alive, technically. They have their souls intact but they’ve been transformed into whatever shape Mahito wants them to be and they obey his commands. They are victims of Mahito’s twisted views on life and the soul.
This point is clear whenever we get a chance to see one of these transfigured humans come into contact with either Nanami or Itadori. As a result of fighting the three transfigured humans, Itadori has one of them beg to be killed. Nanami had the same experience in the sewers a few episodes ago. Transfigured humans live a tortured life where their will and lives are not their own.
Itadori is forced to kill the three transfigured humans in order to rejoin the fight with Mahito before Nanami suffers the same fate. Now Itadori has killed someone. It’s something he didn’t want to do and resisted against. The question now will be “How will Itadori respond?”
Jujutsu Kaisen episode 13 gives us a little look into Kento Nanami’s past in the normal world. During the time he shunned becoming a jujutsu sorcerer, Nanami worked as a stock broker. His life was focused on making money. He needed to make money for his clients. He needed to make money for his company. He needed to make money for himself.
From how it’s depicted, the only thing he earned from this life is emptiness. Nanami appear to be completely dissatisfied and hollow. He can’t even have a nice conversation with the clerk at a bakery. You can see why he decided to come back into the world of jujutsu sorcerers and curses.
Is Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 13 Worth Watching?
Yes. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 13 is worth watching. Back near the beginning of the anime I was warned by someone that the story was going to get darker. At the time I was enamored with the amount of humor that was in this anime (you can check out the videos I’ve made on the subject). This episode feels like that warning coming true.
As a result of the fighting, Mahito learns how to use Domain Expansion. He traps Nanami in while shutting Itadori out. Unable to do Domain Expansion himself, Nanami is face with his own impending death. Itadori’s invasion at the last moment did nothing to lighten the mood as Mahito’s ability reached Sukuna for the second time. Despite it being unintentional, Sukuna made Mahito pay.
There’s something about watching characters with overwhelming power act that I find incredibly entertaining. Maybe it was Sukuna’s sense of superiority or the satisfaction I got at watching Mahito come into contact with a curse far stronger than him. I just really enjoyed this moment.
It was also the perfect culmination of the fight. Mahito is the bad guy that obviously needs to be eliminated as fast as possible. His ability to transform people into his little playthings is shocking and terrible. Mahito’s desire to learn and grow means he’ll only become more difficult to defeat as time goes on. He needs to be exorcised now!
Mahito’s escape only means that we get to look forward to bigger and more exciting fights ahead. Personally, I’m curious to see if Sukuna and Itadori develop a relationship that’s something similar to Naruto and the Nine-Tails from Naruto. Sukuna doesn’t appear to be willing to go down that path but you never know. I’ve been very please with Jujutsu Kaisen and I hope the anime continues to give us more of what we’ve seen in these past thirteen episodes!
Now go watch some anime!
