It’s amazing how the mood of Jujutsu Kaisen can change so quickly.
Fresh off the entertaining baseball game that we were treated to last episode, Jujutsu Kaisen dives right into the murder of four men. It’s a completely different direction for the anime. In the previous episode, we were watching the students from Kyoto and Tokyo take each other on in a fun game of baseball. Now Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara are stepping into a fight for their lives.
This story does seem to come out of left field. Technically it does tie in to what happened previously with what we see with Mahito, but the story feels like it just took a random turn. Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara are all of the sudden assigned to investigate a series of deaths. No buildup. No setting the stage. It’s just a cold open for this story.
It would’ve been nice to see a little bit of a connection to the previous episodes, but Jujutsu Kaisen episode 22 still puts on a good show for us. From the very beginning, this episode gives off a serious, creepy horror aura that only intensifies as more facts about the case are revealed. It turns out that the four men killed all went to the same middle school. The middle school is also where Fushiguro and his sister went.
When Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara reach Fushiguro’s old middle school we’re greeted with one of the few moments of comedy in this episode. Jujutsu Kaisen‘s typical comedic displays were really dialed back here. Fushiguro is revealed as the kid who beat up all of the delinquents and bullies during his time. A fact that surprises Nobara and Itadori while also embarrassing Fushiguro.
Their playful banter helps give a little levity to an increasingly serious situation. You can’t help but feel the danger build as it’s revealed that Fushiguro’s sister participated in the same test of courage that everyone else did. Now her life is on the line just like everyone else.
While all of this is going on, Mahito is effectively making himself out to be the perfect bad guy. In Jujutsu Kaisen episode 22, Mahito uses one of the special grade cursed items on a victim he has pinned to the wall. By “use” I mean he shoves it into the guy’s mouth so that he’ll turn into a curse. I made the mistake of eating something while watching this anime episode, I don’t think I’ll do that again while watching Jujutsu Kaisen.
As Fushiguro, Itadori and Nobara figure out what they need to do to confront the curse, I can’t help but feel like they’re stepping into an incredibly dangerous situation. I feel like they’re more in danger now than when they were fighting Hanami during the exchange event. If I was to take a guess as to why that is, I think it’s because of how this curse has been built up over the course of the episode.
There’s nothing more scary than the unknown evil that’s lurking in the dark. With people dying gruesome deaths, there a sense of fear looming over all of the normal people. The attacks by this curse have everyone spooked.
Is Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 22 Worth Watching?
I’m a fan of Jujutsu Kaisen so I’m going to say yes, episode 22 is worth watching. This is not an anime for kids though so I’d only recommend it for mature audiences. Just the scene where Mahito shoves the cursed object in the guy’s mouth is enough to prove that point. I wanted to throw up.
The exciting part about Jujutsu Kaisen episode 22 is that we’re now set up for a good fight in episode 23. Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara have entered the domain of the curse. The aforementioned test subject of Mahito has also shown up. It should be a pretty good fight. Speaking of which…
Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 23 Preview
From the preview we can see that the fight is not going to be as easy as you’d think. I know I was assuming that the recent power-up that everyone got before and during the exchange event would mean that they wouldn’t have that much of an issue with a curse like this. Itadori did go toe-to-toe with Hanami after all and he’s a special-grade curse.
From the quick flash of images we get, it looks like someone has a teleportation ability. Nobara is the one that has to deal with this. Fushiguro is faced with a curse that has the same appearance as the one that he and Itadori faced in the detention center. If you remember, that one had the power of one of Sukuna’s fingers.
If you can think back, that battle ended with Itadori losing control of his body when he asked Sukuna to take over. Eventually that led to Sukuna ripping out Itadori’s heart. In this preview, it looks like Fushiguro has his hands full as he appears bloody and beaten. I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out what happens.
