It’s Fushiguro’s turn to get stronger in Jujutsu Kaisen episode 23.
I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated because this is the second time that I wanted to describe something in the most current episode of Jujutsu Kaisen only to be beaten to the punch by the episode itself. The first time this happened was back when Jogo fought Satoru Gojo. I thought “Volcano head” would be a great way to describe him and that exact phrase pops out during the fight.
In Jujutsu Kaisen episode 23, I was thinking that Fushiguro and Nobara’s fight against the cursed spirit under the bridge resembled the whack-a-mole game. Low-and-behold that’s exactly how it’s described. Maybe one day Jujutsu Kaisen will leave some of the unique descriptions to those of us who want to review the episode!
Joking aside, this is another serious episode from this anime. That’s saying something because we don’t normally get two in a row. There’s typically some kind of humor that pops out in just about every episode but it’s mostly absent here. I’m not counting the “Jujutsu Stroll” part after the credits by the way.
Jujutsu Kaisen episode 23 highlights just how much Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara have improved as jujutsu sorcerers. Itadori is fighting a special grade curse on equal footing. Fushiguro was able to defeat a curse that had consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers. Nobara doesn’t seem out of place when facing off with the other special grade curse.
It’s Fushiguro that the episode focuses in on. Had this been 20 episodes ago, he would’ve been beaten to a pulp with little effort. The events at the juvenile detention center are briefly referenced for a flashback. If you remember, another cursed spirit that had consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers nearly wiped the team out.
Fushiguro’s development in this episode goes along with the narrative that Gojo Satoru is bringing strong jujutsu sorcerers into his circle. We get the standard “power up” treatment here with Fushiguro remembering a training session with Satoru that culminated in the phrase “dying to win and risking death to win are two different things.” That phrase allows Fushiguro to access the power that he had previously been unable to draw out.
In doing so, Jujutsu Kaisen ensures that he’s not going to be left behind. We already know that Itadori is on the fast track when it comes to his development. Now it’s Fushiguro’s turn. I’m assuming that Nobara will come next.
Besides his physical development, there is also a significant amount of character development here. We learn about Fushiguro’s past, which includes his time with his step-sister in junior high. We already knew that she was bedridden after being cursed. Now, we get to see Fushiguro go through some maturing as he only wishes to help his sister heal.
It’s a touching moment as he’s normally cold and distant. We never really know what’s going on with Fushiguro so this episode is invaluable in that regard. I guess you can say that he’s been humanized more. It’s easier to empathize with him.
Is Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 23 Worth Watching?
Yes. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 23 is worth watching. The fighting here is once again excellent. The curse holding Sukuna’s finger might’ve been defeated but there are still two more special grade curses to deal with. It’s going to be a race to see who will end up with Sukuna’s finger in the end.
I know I’ve already spoken a lot about Fushiguro’s development in this episode but it makes episode 23 more meaningful than just a bunch of action. We get a little peek at what both Gojo Satoru and Sukuna saw in the young jujutsu sorcerer. I’ll be exciting to see where he goes from here.
Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 24 Preview
Obviously with the way that episode 23 ended we can expect to see fighting between the jujutsu sorcerers and curses that came to get Sukuna’s finger. Mahito and Suguru Geto make an appearance in the preview so I’m sure they’ll have some part in the fighting as well. If I was to guess I’d say that they pop in at an opportune time in order to try and grab the finger.
Judging from the preview it also looks like someone with either be lulled into a dream or be shown images that they don’t particularly want to see. How this will happen and who will be the victim is unknown. I’ll make another guess and say that Fushiguro will be the one to see all of this as he lays in the riverbed dreaming. It’ll probably be more about his past.
Jujutsu Kaisen episode 24 should be pretty exciting from what I can tell. With one of Sukuna’s fingers on the line there’s no telling who’s going to show up. I’ll be excited to get to next Friday!
Now go watch some anime!
