Kingdom Season 1 Episode 11 Review

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 11 Review

Kingdom season 1 episode 11 gives us a fight scene that should be hard to criticize, but I couldn’t help but feel like there were a few things off. From the time that Xin descends the other side of the Red Turtle Gate, episode 11 has little miscues that keep it from being excellent. It may be a solid anime episode, but it could be elite.

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 10 Review

What do you think of the story here in episode 11?

As a whole, the story of Kingdom season 1 episode 11 is fine. It’s basically just one big fight to get to Jiao and kill minister Jie Shi. As with any major battle in anime, there are ups and downs as events progress. There’s actually a lot of action considering the size of the force that Zheng and Xin lead.

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 11 - Xin and Zuo Ci

There are times in episode 11 that I thought that the story was slowly getting to its point. One specific example of this is when Xin and Bi are leading troops in the corridor and Bi has the time to explain what’s coming up. I couldn’t help but think “You guys are in a time crunch. Do you have time to narrate about your future opponent?”

I’ve seen this kind of dialogue in anime before. I understand its usefulness in progressing the story and building anticipation for a future fight, but it’s still unrealistic. The more time that Bi and Xin waste getting to the Royal Court the more time Jiao has to either flee or organize a defense. I’ll go more into this a little bit later.

What did Kingdom season 1 episode 11 get right?

If one thing came across in Kingdom season 1 episode 11 it was the ferocity of the mountain folk. It was a lot of fun watching them cut down their enemies. They’re like a wild horde of berserkers that can’t be stopped. After watching this episode, I know I wouldn’t want to face them in a fight.

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 11 - Yang Duanhe

The ferocity of the mountain folk ended up being topped by the abilities of their king, Yang Duanhe. Not to be outdone by her subordinates, Duanhe shows that she is more than capable of getting her hands dirty. Kingdom did a really good job presenting Duanhe as someone who is worthy of being a leader.

What did episode 11 get wrong?

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, there were little things spread out throughout the episode that kept Kingdom season 1 episode 11 from being great. The first of these was Xin’s time at the Red Turtle Gate. Both at the end of episode 10 and at the beginning of episode 11, we were shown a scene of troops descending the stairs in an attempt to stop Xin from opening the gate.

Once Xin successfully accomplished his mission, it was like those troops were completely forgotten about. Actually, they were forgotten about right after Xin jumped down. I thought it was going to be a race against time to get the gate open but that was not the case.

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 11 - Xin on top of the wall

The other inconsistency that I noticed in Kingdom season 1 episode 11 was the use of blood during the fighting. It seemed to come and go depending on the situation. The three mountain folk who were shot with bolts didn’t shed a single drop of blood. The mountain folk who died at the hands of Zuo Ci sure did. We’re even shown a picture of the walls oozing blood at one point.

It’s like Kingdom can’t decide what type of anime it wants to be. Does it want to be more like Berserk and have a ton of gore? Does Kingdom want to be more family friendly and cut it out altogether? Trying to be in a happy middle ground doesn’t really work.

Is Kingdom season 1 episode 11 worth watching?

Despite my gripes about the episode, Kingdom season 1 episode 11 is a perfectly acceptable episode to watch. My complaints are minor in comparison to what’s going on in the anime. They’re just small things that bug me. Overall I think that Kingdom is doing a good job at giving us a compelling story. That trend continues here in episode 11.

I can definitely see how this anime isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like a story full of violence, political intrigue and action then this anime isn’t for you. Kingdom season 1 episode 11 has all three of those things present so it may not be suitable for your tastes. It is for me though, and I recommend watching it.

Now go watch some anime!
