Kingdom Season 1 Episode 33

It’s about time! I thought General Wang Yi would never get in on the action. With all of the excitement from Pang Nuan’s night attack now over, the Qin general finally decides to get in on the action. I wonder how long it will be until he comes across his old rival from Zhao. At least Kingdom season 1 episode 33 gets us one step closer to that confrontation!

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 32 Review

Where can I watch Kingdom season 1 episode 33?

If you want to watch this anime episode and not threaten the security of your computer, then you can go on over to either Hulu or Funimation. If you want to watch it free and without commercials, you can go to whatever pirated site you like to visit. I wouldn’t recommend that option for a number of reasons.

Personally, I watch Kingdom over at Hulu because that’s where I originally found it. I guess I could make the switch to Funimation but I’m creature of habit. I’ll have to for season 2, since Hulu only has the first season, but I just can’t find the motivation to go ahead and do it now. Maybe it’s because I know that I’ll want to go ahead and subscribe to Funimation once I’ll get there.

How was the story in episode 33?

Not bad, I guess. What we got was the development of the battle between Qin and Zhao. Meng Wu and his army is lured into the trap that was set for General Wang Yi and his men suffered because of it. Wang Yi steps onto the battlefield and immediately shows why he’s to be feared. Xin and the Fei Xin Force show off their grit despite their heavy losses. Finally, the mountain folk show back up brining a warning about Zhao.

Of course, there’s a lot more that goes into Kingdom season 1 episode 33. Meng Wu knowingly ran straight into the trap. He basically had a “Damn the torpedoes” type of mentality. Meng Wu had faith that his fighting ability would trounce any strategy put in place to stop him.

It was enjoyable for what it was. I did find myself predicting things throughout the episode, and that was a little disappointing. I know that good stories usually stick to a successful formula. The only thing they do is alter it a little bit with their characters and settings, but there comes a point where I want to see something different. Maybe the fight between Wang Yi and Pang Nuan will bring things up for me.

What did Kingdom season 1 episode 33 get right?

What I’m going to put here is also going to show up in the next section on what I think episode 33 got wrong. You might ask, “How is that possible?” It’s because I think one of the major elements of Kingdom season 1 episode 33 was both necessary but also got a little bit longwinded.

What I’m referring to is the communication system that the armies used during the battle. Specifically, the flags used by the Qin army and General Wang Yi. It’s tough to communicate on a battlefield in the mountains. There’s forests and rough terrain that limit sight and make messages hard to deliver. There has to be some way a general can communicate back and forth with his army.

Why are the flags so important?

What the Qin flags did in episode 33 made me understand why Wang Yi made Meng Wu promise to always remain within sight of his HQ. It was to make sure that Meng Wu, who was not used to being under Wang Yi’s command, stayed within the lines of communication. Once that clicked, I realized exactly what the situation was.

Meng Wu drove his army out of sight of Qin HQ. There was no way for Wang Yi to know what was happening and that lack of knowledge could prove fatal for the entire army. It added an element of suspense to an episode that was largely predictable.

Why did this also take away from what was going on?

The problem that Kingdom season 1 episode 33 had with explaining the communication methods employed here is that there was too much exposition. Once we were told what the flags were for, we didn’t need to have the narrator break in every time there was a change and explain what the change was. Have the characters explain it through their dialogue.

It got to the point that at times I felt like I was in a classroom lecture. That’s not the type of feeling I want while watching an anime. I’m here for the entertainment, not to take notes for an upcoming test.

What did episode 33 get wrong?

Well, I kind of already mentioned it. I wasn’t a big fan of how much time we got with the narrator explaining to us the situation with the flags. I’m not going to say it again.

Besides that, there’s the usual complaint about CGI. Sometimes it’s more obvious than others. It’s really bad when it’s used during character dialogue. Besides looking cheap, the timing of the lip movements don’t match the dialogue. And I’m watching the English dub too! It’s not a matter of English voice actors trying to match Japanese lip animation.

Is Kingdom season 1 episode 33 worth watching?

I think so. I enjoyed watching Kingdom season 1 episode 33. It’s not perfect, but it’s an entertaining anime episode. If you’ve gotten this far in the season then there’s no reason why you should stop watching here.

Now go watch some anime!
