Kingdom season 1 episode 7 is all about building up the anticipation for the meeting with the mountain folk. It does a pretty good job of that too. At this point I don’t know what’s going to happen. That goes for both Zheng, who went with the group of warriors that welcomed the king of Qin, and Xin, who followed shortly after.
How did you like the story in episode 7?
I felt like I’d seen this story plenty of times before. I’m going to go ahead and assume you probably have too. Zheng leads his ragtag group to try to make allies with an unknown yet fearsome people in the mountains. We’re shown that the mountain folk are capable fighters through their elimination of Zheng’s pursuers.
As you’d expect, Xin shows his usefulness in protecting Zheng when a fight almost breaks out between the two groups. This forces Lord Changwen to realize that Xin is the one that is best suited to protect Zheng, not him. Like I said, all of this has been shown to us plenty of times before.
That does not mean that the story itself is bad. Thankfully Kingdom season 1 episode 7 did what it needed to do to tell this story well. Thanks to this episode I have a clear picture of what’s going on, who’s in danger, and what the potential outcomes could be. The only questions I have going through my mind are ones like “What’s going to happen next?” That’s a good sign.
What did Kingdom season 1 episode 7 get right?
I think episode 7 did a good job at making the mountain people out to be a credible threat. With both the story of how they performed on the battlefield coupled with how easily they killed the Qin soldiers, you come away with a feeling that the mountain people are dangerous. When you add to that their unknown disposition you’ve got a seriously scary boogeyman.
Another area that I think Kingdom season 1 episode 7 got right was in changing out the guard. Lord Changwen has been Zheng’s protector and most loyal ally. Now that Xin’s in the picture, he’s been taking the reigns himself. When Zeng punched the mountain warrior you sensed that Lord Changwen realized who the real protector of the king was.
What did episode 7 get wrong?
The one thing here that stood out to me was just a fleeting moment of animation during Zheng’s ascent. We got a shot of one of the mountain warriors viewing the Qin group from afar as they resumed their climb. In watching this scene, both Xin and Diao’s characters were animated in such a weird way that it threw me off.
Xin and Diao were supposed to be running up the hill while everyone else was walking. Their movements seemed more appropriate for an anime that’s silly and funny. Maybe one more like Pokemon or something. A kid’s anime. It didn’t fit the serious nature of what’s going on here in Kingdom.
Besides that I don’t have any other serious complaints. The story may be pretty standard but it’s easy to follow and it’s being told well. I don’t feel like there’s a lot of wasted time in this anime, which is always a plus. Who wants to spend their time watching characters dramatically stare at each other?
Is Kingdom season 1 episode 7 worth watching?
I enjoyed watching episode 7. If you’ve been following along from the beginning of this anime then there’s no reason why you wouldn’t want to watch this episode. Kingdom season 1 episode 7 does its job well and gets you to where it wants to take you. I’m just going to happily continue on to the next episode and see if this continues!
Now go watch some anime!
