Way to go Subaru, you managed to alienate the one person you’ve wanted to impress.
I fully expect Subaru to kill himself in order to use reset by death and redo that whole showing we just witnessed. That was not Subaru’s best. That was actually pretty ugly on his part. Subaru needs to figure himself out before he tries to keep pursuing Emilia.
That may seem a little dark, but it’s the only thing that Subaru has in his arsenal that could potentially rectify their relationship. Subaru doesn’t have any discernible skill that would allow him to dazzle everyone and change their perception of him. When you show yourself to be a selfish ass, there’s typically no coming back from that.
And that’s where we get to the highlight of this episode and I think a breath of fresh air. I’ve written plenty already about how I think that Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World is so much better than the standard Isekai anime because it takes a different path. I won’t rehash that here. It’s that uniqueness that shines through in what episode 13 gives us.
Subaru is so selfish in his actions that he doesn’t realize that he’s hurting the person he cares the most for. Subaru has disregarded Emilia’s feelings and caused her so much pain and trouble that she’s finally gotten to the point where she said “Enough!” For a guy, that’s a dangerous place to push a girl to. I don’t see a way that he can repair the relationship.
This weakness of Subaru’s makes sure that it’s easy for us as the audience to relate to him. Everyone’s had a time where they acted in their own self interest. Everyone has probably said things in a fight that they wish they could immediately take back. I assume that just about everyone has gone through the experience of alienating a friend or having a relationship end.
It’s easy to put yourself in Subaru’s place. Because of that, it’s easy to get emotionally involved in Subaru’s story because we also have the knowledge of the information that he’s so desperate to share. We know about his ability to reset events with his death. We know about all of his interactions with Emilia. We want him to succeed because we’ve seen him go through so much on her behalf. It just looks like, in a moment of weakness, Subaru has destroyed his chances.
That’s a compelling story that I think is easy to get into. With that being the case, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World has managed to break out of the Isekai mold. No wonder the anime has become pretty popular.
Is Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 13 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 13 is worth watching. It’s not an easy episode to watch. I kept yelling at Subaru to stop and consider what Emilia was feeling. In their argument I kept calling him a dumbass. Those reactions show that the anime is doing what it sets out to do, get me emotionally invested. Now I just need to see how everything is going to end.
Now go watch some anime!
