Where’s Captain Ahab and Queequeg when you need them?
When you’ve watched enough anime, eventually you start to get used to how a story progresses. I’m sure in whatever particular genre of anime that you prefer you can point out twists and turns before they happen. That’s actually true in most storytelling. A good story usually contains the same elements as past successful stories.
There has to be a good guy and a bad guy. There has to be a point of contention. There has to be a struggle between the two sides for supremacy and finally the good guy has to win a hard fought victory. I know that’s really simplistic but that does summarize the majority of good stories that I can think of in all different types of media.
With Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, I still believe that Subaru is going to figure things out in the end but I sure can’t tell how he’s going to pull it off. I realize he’s cursed and evil creatures are attracted to him but can’t the guy catch a break? Now he has to deal with a massive, cloud surfing white wale that somehow has the ability to make people forget the existence of others.
With all of this going on, I really don’t see a way for Subaru to find the best path without having to die 50 to 100 times more. I don’t think he’ll have the mental capacity to handle all of that. Subaru is barely hanging on as it is. Oh, by the way, if Subaru tells someone of his ability to return by death he doesn’t die, the person who gets told the secret dies.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 17 did disappoint me with how Subaru treated Emilia. I get Subaru is losing his marbles. He’s on the verge of insanity but if he wants to get Emilia to believe him he has to change his attitude. I wanted to punch him in the face and say “Didn’t you learn from last time!” That’s no way to treat Emilia.
To be completely transparent with all of you right now I’m struggling with putting my thoughts into words right now. I’m completely thrown off by Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World’s ability to come up with a completely unique story that has no clear path forward. I want to try to figure out what the ending is going to be but I can’t do that. There are little hints here and there, but nothing is so obvious that I can point to it and say “There it is! Go do that next time!”
I’ve gone through lots of anime since starting this blog and I have to say, I’m impressed with how things are going. It’s not easy to keep the audience completely in the dark. That just means that I have to keep watching in order to find out what happens.
Is Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 17 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 17 is worth watching. I can’t stop watching because there’s no telling what’s going to happen next. Subaru appears to be destined for a life full of memories that only he will have. He’ll have to face the pain of loss over and over again all by himself. The ones he loves will not be able to help share in the burden that creates.
Now go watch some anime!
