This was the pep talk that Subaru desperately needed.
Subaru has been desperate. He’s labored under the assumption that everything has to be on him. The realization that he’s not all that special has led him to die time and time again only to marginally get by. Subaru may have been able to work his way into the life of Emilia, but he’s going to need a lot more support if he’s going to keep her safe.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 18 just managed to create a division between fans who think Subaru should end up with Emilia and those who think he should end up with Rem. I’ll go on the record and say that Subaru shouldn’t end up with either of them, they’re much too good for him. Rem especially has shown herself to be a saint in maid’s clothing in episode 18.
In building Rem up to the point where she’s obviously too good for Subaru, episode 18 provides us with the necessary pick-me-up that the anime has needed. There has been so much death and despair in the last couple of episodes that it’s been difficult to watch. It felt like Subaru was slowly descending into madness after all of his attempts to set things right failed.
Once Subaru resolved himself to not being able to be effective at all, he proposed to run off with Rem. As tempting as that would be, she couldn’t accept that proposition because Subaru wasn’t making the offer out of love for her. He was rather doing it as a last resort. She loved him enough to point that out and set him straight.
That was as emotional a moment in anime as I can remember. I’m sure there’s plenty of emotion flying around in Shojo anime but I don’t really watch those. I’m glad we had this reset. It was much needed.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World successfully transitioned from a feeling of impending doom to a feeling of optimism and hope all in the course of one conversation. With Rem by his side, it feels like Subaru can actually make a difference now. With the change in mindset, perhaps Subaru can use his bullheaded determination to come up with a plan to save everyone around the Roswaal estate.
It really does feel like the anime is starting from zero. Right now I just hope that Subaru has remembered enough of the details from his many failed attempts to patch something together that will work. I feel like he’s been given enough information to succeed, I just don’t know if he has the ability to recognize it.
Is Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 18 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 18 is worth watching. I kept wondering when Subaru and Rem would start working toward devising a plan to save everyone but I was pleasantly surprised when they didn’t. This conversation needed to happen. Subaru needed to have his focus changed.
I did enjoy the detail that Rem described what her life with Subaru would look like. She had every detail imagined and planned out. It all sounded so perfect and by the time she was done, you wished that her dream could come true. It made me a little sad when it became apparent that Rem was willing to give up on that dream for Subaru’s benefit. She deserves better anyway.
Now go watch some anime!
