Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 6 Review

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Episode 6 - Subaru trying to figure out how to not die
Subaru actually trying to think things through for a change

Hopefully this is the first sign that Subaru is showing a little more thought into how he should handle situations after he comes back from death.

If you read my review of the previous episode, you know that I wasn’t too high on Subaru’s ability to think past the moment. I also have found him na├»ve. While I don’t expect him to become a super genius who can outsmart even the most cunning opponents, I wanted to see Subaru use a little more critical thought when faced with the reality that he died unexpectedly.

It appears that its not going to take long to see him start to develop in this direction. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 6 gave me exactly what I wanted and had Subaru start to think for a moment. His only miscalculation is was in who the target actually was. That’s perfectly understandable considering the situation that Emilia is in.

Before moving on, I’d like to point out a moment in this anime episode that is bothering me. It’s when Subaru falls from the cliff and the rope that he tied himself off with breaks his fall. In real life that would most likely seriously injure him to where he would not be able to get up and fight.

I know this because in my working career I’ve spent time in a manufacturing facility where fall protection was necessary. We were trained on the proper equipment to use to prevent our deaths in case of a fall. If you’re wondering, in the United States the government body that oversees worker safety, OHSA, states that only a full body harness is allowed. Using a belt designed as a fall arrest system was phased out in 1998 (p. 32-33).

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Episode 6 - Subaru hanging by a rope
Subaru trying to break his back

Considering Subaru had no give in that rope I’d assume that his back would’ve been broken. He would’ve been stuck on the ground at the bottom of the cliff with little hope to see his attacker as they finished him off. I know it might not seem like a big deal to you but it’s something that stands out to me due to my work background. Thankfully it doesn’t ruin this episode.

Finding out who the attacker is will make for an interesting moment if Subaru doesn’t survive this. From first glance I’d say that he’s totally outclassed and has little hope of coming out on top of this fight. His only path for survival is to talk his way out. If he doesn’t make it out we’ll have to see how he handles his reset.

That’s the genius of this anime though. It gets you to start thinking of the different scenarios that could come as a result of Subaru dying. There’s the chance that he could come out of this alive, but he also might not. If he doesn’t, then he’ll have a little more information that he didn’t.

In this case, he’ll know that Rem is the one who’s after him. How will that affect him if he wakes up in the Roswaal mansion again? Is he doomed to repeat this death time and time again? I want to know so I’m forced to watch the next episode. That’s a brilliant move on the part of those who developed this story.

Is Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 6 Worth Watching?

Yes. Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 6 is worth watching. This episode is worth watching just to find out that Rem is the one who’s out to kill Subaru. Don’t take this as a spoiler either. I read ahead on the plot a little bit and found out she was trying to kill him and still found this episode compelling. So far this anime has been worth the time and I’m really enjoying it.

Now go watch some anime!
