No one said it’d be easy to bring down the White Whale. No one said that there would be three White Whales either. What a battle! Subaru has turned things around and is on track to finally save the day. His despair has long been forgotten now.
When I look back to how events unfolded in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World I have to say that Subaru’s struggles just make this victory that much sweeter. Other anime should take note on how the story here took the protagonist down to the depths of despair, bailed him out and brought on a story of redemption. It really makes the high that much higher.
This review includes two episodes because they really do go together well. The story here is more like a part 1 and part 2 of the battle with the White Whale. Frankly I didn’t want to stop and write a review after episode 20 so I just went ahead and watched episode 21 as well. I just couldn’t wait to find out what happened.
The look we see from Subaru here is far better than when we saw him have his fight with Emilia. Subaru’s bravado isn’t just a fool’s confidence anymore. He’s actually trying to think things through before acting, at least somewhat. Subaru still comes up with some pretty crazy schemes but at least there’s a chance that they’ll work out. In this case, things did work out.
The fight with the White Whale felt like one of those anime battles where you have hope that the good guys will eventually come out on top even though there are times that things look grim. Things did look bad there for a while too, especially at the end of episode 20. The White Whale pulled out his trump card and created two doppelgangers to make it look like there were three White Whales. Considering how hard the fight with one whale was, the sight of three was just too much for everyone except Subaru.
Subaru was the shining ray of hope that raised morale and led the fight against the giant beast. You knew once episode 21 really got going that he was going to pull off the victory and in true anime fashion, that’s exactly what happened. What we get treated to is one of those great anime feel good moments. You know what kind of moment I’m talking about.
The biggest takeaway that I got from watching Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episodes 20 and 21 was that Subaru’s personality really makes him an easy person to cheer for. He may be a little dense, naïve and sometimes self-centered, but overall he’s a good guy at heart. He’s just a likable person, what else can you say?
Are Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episodes 20 and 21 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episodes 20 and 21 were a blast to watch. The fight with the White Whale will be something that I remember for a long time coming. I think the anime has brought us to a very satisfying point. Subaru is on his path to redemption with Emilia. If he can formulate a plan to bring down the White Whale then he should be able to figure out how to reconcile with the girl he loves.
Now go watch some anime!
