I have to admit to cheating a little bit here. Normally I go episode by episode and do a review. I just got so wrapped up in what was going on in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World that I just didn’t want to stop. I’m sure that you know the feeling pretty well.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World rewarded me for this by giving an epic ending to an anime season. I finally started to believe that Subaru was going to get his act together and learn from all of his brushes with death. Subaru has finally gotten to the point that most anime protagonists start.
The last four episodes of season 1 of Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World do a really good job of wrapping up the season. If you remember, episode 21 ended with the successful defeat of the White Whale. Episode 22 picks up with the revelation that the reserve forces were blocking the road. The reserve force is ready to jump into the fight with the Witches Cult.
As expected, things don’t go to plan on the first attempt. Subaru has to reset at least once. That’s for the best, though. Subaru shines as his newfound ability to recognize his shortcomings and ask for help end up with him accomplishing his goal. You don’t want to miss the final part of episode 25. That’s just a helpful hint.
I was impressed with what I saw. I felt like I watched the maturation of a well intentioned, albeit not perfect, protagonist get over his struggles. In episodes 22 through 25 Subaru demonstrated the same goofy personality that makes him a lovable idiot while also adding in a touch of mental sharpness that was sorely needed. It’s the perfect blend for Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World.
In order for Subaru to shine as a hero, there has to be a credible threat to Emilia and the others at the Roswaal mansion. The Witches Cult provides the best example of an evil organization that I can think of. Petelgeuse and his followers are a tough crowd to bring down. Petelgeuse’s ability to swap bodies is really troublesome. It’s actually the source of one of Subaru’s deaths.
When we finally get to the end of the chain of events and Subaru outsmarts Petelgeuse, you get a deep sense of satisfaction. Petelgeuse is a cockroach that finally gets stepped on. Subaru was disappointed that the final victory came at a cost, but it was well worth it.
I don’t want to spoil too much more of the story for you. I found myself attached to the screen, unable to not press the “next episode” button. You’ll have the same experience if you decide to give Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World a try. I’m happy right now that most of season 2 has already been dubbed.
Are Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episodes 22-25 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episodes 22-25 are worth watching. I highly recommend watching this anime just for this ending. Subaru is annoying, dense and can even go a little crazy, but his redemption at the end is worth it. I think this anime is one of the best Isekai out there. You need to watch this one!
Now go watch some anime!
