Top 5 Memorable Moments from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Water Breathing Technique
Water Breathing Technique

After going through and reviewing all of the episodes of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime I thought it might be a good idea to make a list of the top 5 moments. I chose 5 because I didn’t want to have to come up with more than that. It seems everyone does a list of 10 but I don’t want to do the same thing that everyone else is. As with all other lists, this is subjective so if you think there’s something missing please feel free to let me know in the comments. Here’s my list:

5. Tanjiro defeats the Hand Demon during Final Selection.

We know that demons are dangerous. The few that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba showed us to this point took the fight to Tanjiro. Going into final selection though, we saw Tanjiro train himself nearly to death. He acclimated himself to a higher climate than he was used to, descended a mountain while avoiding traps that became increasingly dangerous, and sliced a huge boulder in two. The demons inhabiting the mountain where Final Selection was taking place should be no issue. But then we meet the Hand Demon.

The Hand Demon made it a point to kill all of Mr. Urokodaki students as he was the one to trap the demon on the mountain. With a grotesque appearance and a neck as tough as iron, the Hand Demon is too much for the demon slayer candidates. It’s not until Tanjiro utilizes his training that he’s finally able to defeat the demon. This is the first time we get to see the beauty of the artwork behind the Breathing Techniques. It was quite the high moment.

Tanjiro’s victory was a signal to those watching that he had what it took to pass final selection and become a demon slayer. He made the transition from the normal mountain boy who worked hard and cared for others to a swordsman on a mission to defeat demons. This was his first real hurdle to jump and he did so spectacularly.

4. Zenitsu kills the Brother Spider Demon.

In my reviews of all of the episodes of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba I was pretty critical of Zenitsu. His constant complaining and cowardice annoyed me. There’s no fight that he wouldn’t run from. That being said, he was able to scare himself to sleep in the Tsuzumi Mansion when being chased down by the Tongue Demon. It’s a good thing too, as Zenitsu’s true talent comes out when he’s unconscious.

We got to see a glimpse of this talent when Zenitsu killed the Tongue Demon. While that was entertaining to watch, we got to see a lot more when Zenitsu was fighting with the Brother Spider Demon. The electricity that pulsed through his veins kept growing and growing, fueled by his memories of his training, only to erupt with a lightning fast slash that cut through the demon’s neck in an instant. This was a moment of beauty that I won’t soon forget.

3. Tanjiro tracks down Muzan Kibutsuji

Muzan Kibutsuji is the demon that killed Tanjiro’s family and turned Nezuko into a demon. His scent is burned into Tanjiro’s memory. When he catches it while about to eat a bowl of noodles, Tanjiro can do nothing else but follow it. When he finally catches up with Muzan Kibutsuji we get to see a scene play out that’s unlike any other we’ve seen up until this point.

Tanjiro was always the composed, friendly young man who had sympathy for the demons he killed. He understood that they were victims of Kibutsuji as well. That friendliness is completely gone when he’s staring into the face of the demon who destroyed his family. Tanjiro is visibly enraged and shocked when he sees that Kibutsuji is playing house with a woman and a child. Tanjiro vows to track down Kibutsuji no matter what. Some quick maneuvering on Kibutsuji’s creates a distraction and allows him to escape but you get the sense that things are far from over between the young demon slayer and the top demon.

Just thinking about this scene makes me want to see more! I can’t wait for the movie to come out as well as the next season!

2. Muzan Kibutsuji purges the lower ranks of the Twelve Demon Moons.

We obvious know that Muzan Kibutsuji is the bad guy of this anime. It’s also obvious that demons pose a real threat to humans. What I did not expect was to see that Kibutsuji is also a threat to the demons he creates.

The Twelve Demon Moons are the twelve strongest demons Kibutsuji has sired. They’re his upper echelon, his go to subordinates. He says “Jump” and they say “How high.” After the death of Rui, who was the Lower Five (or number 11 of 12), Kibutsuji decides that he doesn’t want the bottom six anymore. He summons them to a distorted dimension and commences with killing the remaining five members of the lower six.

Unfortunately for the demons, Kibutsuji doesn’t just kill them right away. He questions them first. The sense of terror is palpable as Kibutsuji can read the minds of the demons. No matter what they answer, the demons do nothing but offend their master. No words can be used to spare their lives. It’s over.

The sheer brutality of the entire scene is unforgettable. Muzan Kibutsuji is behaving in a way that you would expect from the worst tyrants in history. Every word spoken is used as an excuse to come to the conclusion that Kibutsuji has already deemed necessary. His subordinates are in the most terrible position possible!

1. Tanjiro and Nezuko team up in their fight against Rui.

Tanjiro and Nezuko’s first experience with one of the Twelve Demon Moons was nothing short of fantastic. The story is perfect, Rui misses the familial bonds he had as a human so he tries to recreate it with his demon “family.” He’s envious of Tanjiro and Nezuko because they have the bond that he wants. Tanjiro and Rui are at odds over how bonds are formed and their fight intensifies. Nezuko eventually saves her brother only to be strung up by Rui’s threads.

Tanjiro is pushed to the edge. His sword is broken, his sister is held captive, if he doesn’t come up with something soon he’s going to die. What he pulls out is the highlight of the anime so far. The mixture of the Hinokami Kagura technique and his Water Breathing technique creates an attack that’s a work of art. Add to that Nezuko’s awakening of her blood demon art and you have two siblings who make a lethal combo.

While they might not have been the ones to kill Rui it’s a good bet that their teamwork will only get better from here. The mix of Nezuko’s exploding blood and Tanjiro’s new technique will for sure be used in the future to bring down some demons. If they don’t, we’ll all be the losers as watching this brief moment of teamwork was like watching an artist create a masterwork.
