Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Season 2 Episode 1 Review

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Season 2 Episode 1 - Introduction of Ali

Iruma’s back for a second season of his life surviving the netherworld! Since I just went through the first season of this anime again in order to prepare for season 2, I’m a little confused with where we pick the story back up. I thought Iruma had a complete change of attitude? What happened to that?

As you can expect from the first episode of a new season, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 1 contains a lot of recapping what happened in the first season. Thankfully we weren’t subject to an entire episode focused on retelling old events and Bandai Namco Pictures introduced us to a new story. I actually think the mixing of the refreshers from season 1 were mixed in well with the debut of Alicred.

Alicred is the personification of Iruma’s Gluttonous Feeder Ring. It’s the ring that consumes the magic of those around Iruma and then lets him use that magic as his own. It appears that as Iruma progresses up the rankings in the netherworld Alicred gains new abilities of his own. With Iruma’s promotion to Gimmel, Alicred, or Ali for short, can now speak and interact with the outside world.

I like this new dynamic of Iruma and Ali. It appears that Ali is here to get Iruma into awkward situations that he’ll have to work himself out of. Ali’s already done that with Iruma and Ameri, the President of the Student Council. Ameri can’t shake the opinion that Iruma looks an awful lot like the dem-dol Irumi from season 1. Coming across Iruma dressed up as a girl, thanks to Ali’s influence, does nothing but confirm her suspicions.

With Ali’s appearance and newfound sentience, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 1 has an excuse to look back at previous events without following the same patter as other anime. By tracking where Ali’s growth comes from, Iruma makes a timeline of events that helps solve the mystery while also reminding us what’s gone on in Iruma’s life. It’s a nice re-imagining of the normal recap episode.

My big problem with Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 1 is that it appears that the anime has completely abandoned Iruma’s change in attitude that we saw at the very end of season 1. For those that might not remember, at the end of the final episode Sullivan and Opera wake up Iruma only to be greeted harshly. Iruma is revealed to have an attitude that more matches an evil demon than Sullivan. Season 1 ended on this mystery and that’s where I expected things to pick back up.

What happened? Did Iruma suddenly get better from some unknown netherworld sickness? Did Ali posses Iruma’s body? It doesn’t look that way from the preview of season 2 episode 2. Why would Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun introduce this cliffhanger at the end of season 1 and then not follow up at the start of a new season? I’m going to be pretty annoyed if it’s dropped completely.

Is Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Season 2 Episode 1 Worth Watching?

If you’re a fan of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun then you’ll find that the first episode of season two is an entertaining reintroduction to the anime. Ali appears to be an interesting character that I think will help provide some extra flavor to the story. I think that’s exactly what this anime needed. I was a little miffed about not seeing anything on Iruma’s mysterious change in temperament but I still hope that it’ll come up later. Overall I think this was a solid first episode for season 2.

With Ameri discovering Iruma dressed in girls clothing, the relationship between the two is incredibly awkward. Iruma is set on making Ameri understand that it was just a mistake but it’s going to be difficult to convince her of it. It looks like the solution might be for Iruma to join the Student Council and prove that he’s not into cross dressing. It should be an episode that’s full of the awkward humor that Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is full of.

Now go watch some anime!
