It’s finally time for Iruma and Ameri’s date! What better way to spend a first date than to go to a water park? That’s where Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 takes us. Does that mean that this episode is not worth watching? We’ll have to take a look and find out.
Where can I watch Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20?
With coverage of the Paralympics not causing another delay, you can find episode 20 over at Crunchyroll. This episode didn’t air last week because Japanese T.V. coverage was dedicated to covering an event that comes around every four years, as it should. That’s fine though, waiting a week wasn’t that bad.
Since Demon School season 2 episode 20 didn’t air on Japanese T.V. last week, Crunchyroll also didn’t premier the episode. They have some deal where Crunchyroll will also delay their release of the episode if there’s a delay in Japan. Now that there’s no delay, Crunchyroll has it up on their site.
With this anime episode being on Crunchyroll, you can also find it at VRV. I feel like I’ve written this a thousand times but it does bear repeating. I don’t know if this is the first review you’re read here or not. VRV has an agreement with Crunchyroll where VRV can stream content that airs at Crunchyroll. Personally I’d just stick with Crunchyroll, but you’re free to give VRV a chance if you want.
How was the story in Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20?
Demon School season 2 episode 20 is a full on slice-of-life anime episode. Usually there’s a mix of slice-of-life, action, fantasy and one or two other genres. While you can also apply fantasy to this episode, the main focus is definitely slice-of-life. It is a little different than what we’re used to, but it is fine in the overall story. Ameri and Iruma do need to go on their first date after all!
While I haven’t watched a ton of slice-of-life anime, I can only imagine that what we got here in episode 20 isn’t that foreign to fans of the genre. Ameri and Iruma go on a date at a water park and things don’t go according to Ameri’s plan. Despite all of that, Iruma and Ameri have a good time and seem to grow closer to a romantic relationship.
The events that happen during the course of the episode that cause Ameri’s plan to go haywire stem from both the water park being in the netherworld as well as Ameri’s size and strength advantage over Iruma. Every romantic moment that Ameri has planned out is base on First Love Memories. In that fictional manga, the male love interest is taller than the female lead. In Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, the roles are reversed.
What does that mean for Ameri?
We’re basically treated to a anime episode where Ameri’s expectations are ruined because she didn’t take into account the size difference between her and Iruma. Add to that Iruma is a human in the netherworld and you’ve got one wild first date. Ameri spends the entire time flustered because things aren’t going as she hoped, but in reality Iruma really is having a good time.
At the end of the day, everything works out just fine. Iruma and Ameri have their romantic moment and we’re left thinking that she took the lead in the race for Iruma’s heart. We’ll have to see if Clara can make up ground at some point in the future. For now, we’ll just have to be content with Ameri being the obvious favorite.
What did Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 get right?
I may be in the minority for this opinion, but Ameri’s dad in this episode was fantastic. He wasn’t in it for very long, but I can totally emphasize with him. As the father of a almost 3 year old daughter, I’m sure I’ll be in for something similar when she gets older. I’ll always view her like she is now, cute, little and adoring of her daddy.
I could feel the heartbreak of Henri every time Ameri appears to not need him. Ameri doesn’t help with her obviously hiding something from her father. It’s humor that I think fits in well. At least it’s humor that I can appreciate.
Anything other than Ameri’s father?
I think Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 did a good job of turning the typical date narrative on its head. With Ameri being much taller than Iruma, the standard relationship dynamic is switched. Ameri is the one who is holding Iruma, not the other way around. Ok, I guess the episode does end with Iruma carrying Ameri, but that wasn’t the majority of the story.
It’s interesting to watch every single one of Ameri’s planned activities not work out the way that she wants them to. All that time spent on preparing the most romantic, perfect date went down the drain with every unexpected twist. It fit perfectly into the overall feel of Demon School even if there wasn’t any action to keep us entertained.
What did Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 get wrong?
I know I just said that episode 20 fit in perfectly to the narrative that Demon School has built up, but at the same time this anime episode won’t appeal to everyone. While I enjoyed it, episode 20 was a little bit bland to me. I’m not a slice-of-life anime fan like I am a fan of action or fantasy anime. I can appreciate what it does, but there are other things out there I’d rather watch.
Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 lacked some of the things that give this anime its appeal. It’s just a story about two of the main characters going on a date. Nothing more. To some people, that won’t be enough to get them to want to watch it. I know that while I appreciated what went on between Iruma and Ameri, I was still left wanting to see some action.
Is Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 worth watching?
In all honesty, you could not watch Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 20 and be just fine. All that you need to know about this one is that Ameri and Iruma went to a water park and things didn’t go as Ameri planned. The two high school students still had fun together and ended up closer than when they arrived. That about sums up what went on here.
If you want to watch an anime episode like that, Demon School season 2 episode 20 is perfect for you. If you hear that and it doesn’t appeal, you can skip episode 20 and not really miss anything. I’d be shocked if anything here became something meaningful later.
Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 21 preview
The title of the next episode is “The One Who Rules Over the Netherworld.” There’s a brief image of a veiled character whom I can only assume is the demon who runs the netherworld. With all of the talk in the preview of how Iruma is content with his life in the netherworld, I can only assume that something is going to happen that will shake things up. I don’t know how else you can interpret those words.
The preview also shows us Iruma and Sullivan spending a lot of quality time together. I got the feeling that Sullivan knows that something is up and is trying to cram as much time in with Iruma as possible, just in case. I’ll be interested to see just what happens. Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun season 2 episode 21 should point us in the direction that season 2 will wrap up with. I’m also assuming it will help lead us to a season 3, if there is going to be one. We’ll just have to wait until next week to find out!
Now go watch some anime!
