Strangely, I really enjoyed watching Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9. It wasn’t anything more than an anime episode about the struggle to study for an exam. Despite that lack of complexity, Iruma and friends managed to entertain me for an entire episode. Maybe I was in the mood for something more lighthearted.
What do you think of the story in Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9?
To make a good story, there has to be a problem that needs to be solved. Whether it’s a bad guy that needs to be defeated or a relationship that needs to be mended, the main characters have to have a purpose. At the end of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 8, I was wondering what was going to be the problem going forward.
Nemo’s “Evil cycle” finally wore off and the Misfit Class had gained access to Royal One, the classroom used by the last demon king. Everything was looking great. With a sense of optimism, the Misfit Class can look toward the future. Unfortunately for them, that means a classroom exam.
What does that mean?
Here we have it! The main problem that has to be overcome. Iruma and friends now need to get grades worthy of Royal One. Had they been in their old dump of a classroom, it wouldn’t have been a problem. Their poor grades wouldn’t be a problem. Now that they’re in the most prestigious classroom in the school, anything short of perfection will mean supplementary classes during their vacation.
This is an effective way of creating a sense of desperation. Just about everyone has some level of dread because of school exams. There may be a few people out there who didn’t ever get flustered in school about them, but the majority of the audience should relate to the Misfit Class.
Once I realized the predicament that the Misfit Class was in, the rest of the story of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9 fell right into place. Iruma is probably the worst student in the class. Clara even gets better scores than Iruma. Now he’s faced with the realization that he has to bring those scores up in order to not disappoint his classmates.
What did Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9 get right?
I’m glad that episode 9 didn’t put Iruma into a situation where he can just luck himself out of it. I know that Iruma did find a school subject that was actually easy for him, but the rest of the subjects should be difficult. It appears that Iruma will have to put in some serious work in order to get his grades up. No amount of dodging or helpfulness will work here.
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9 was also very effective in bringing down the Misfit Class from their emotional high. It would be hard for anyone to not feel elated after doing something like unlocking the Royal One classroom. Realizing that you now have to get grades worthy of that classroom is a great way of resetting expectations.
On a more minor note, it was fun to watch Iruma, Asmodeus and Clara parody several different game shows. It’s too bad that Iruma would most likely be the worst game show contestant ever. He does have a pretty big disadvantage. Iruma lacks even the most basic knowledge about the netherworld, and who could blame him!
What did season 2 episode 9 get wrong?
I can’t really think of anything to put in this section. I’m sure there is something in this episode that a more critical reviewer would catch. Once the Misfit Class was told of their upcoming exams, I was hooked on the rest of the episode. All I could think was “How is Iruma going to get out of this one?”
Is Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9 worth watching?
Yes. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 9 is worth watching. I’d recommend watching all of the episodes leading up to this point prior to watching it, though. If you don’t, the anime episode won’t have the same impact. You don’t want to start a story in the middle after all!
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun season 2 episode 10 preview
Iruma, Asmodeus and Clara are now entangled in Balam Shichiro’s class, literally. Balam is the teacher that wrote the book that Iruma managed to score a perfect 100% on. Considering the questions from the book are basic questions about human life, it wasn’t that surprising.
From the brief glimpses we get of episode 10, Iruma is going to continue to answer Balam’s questions. My guess is that Balam will try to trip up Iruma with as many questions as possible. He’ll only get flustered when Iruma has no issues with all of the questions. From that point on I’d say that Balam becomes obsessed with Iruma.
Anyways, it also looks like the Misfit Class will get to the other side of their exams. I couldn’t tell you what the results are going to be, but I don’t expect them to all fail. We’ll just have to wait and see!
Now go watch some anime!
