I need to start watching more baseball anime if they’re like this!
With the attack on Jujutsu High over, all that’s left is to clean up the mess, count the bodies and play a game of baseball! That last one doesn’t really fit but it goes perfectly with how Jujutsu Kaisen likes to add comedy into the middle of a serious story arc. It’s also one reason why I love to watch.
Before even starting the episode, Jujutsu Kaisen sets the tone by it’s title. “Jujutsu Koshien” is a reference to Koshien Stadium. It’s where Japan hosts it’s high school baseball tournament every year. I took a little time to read up on it and I think you should too. Koshien Stadium is one of those storied sports venues around the world that has a pretty interesting history.
With that being in the title, Jujutsu Kaisen episode 21 is obviously going to include a baseball game. Who’s got time to mourn for the dead when there’s baseball to be played?
Jujutsu Kaisen pulls out it’s comedy right after Todo makes several good points on why the exchange event should continue. Todo argued that the sorcerers’ deaths are just further proof that everyone needs to improve their skills. This can only be done by shared experiences of victory and defeat. At this point everyone thought that a fighting tournament was going to be next.
Instead the comedy really gets going with Satoru rigging the selection of what event is to come next and everyone playing along. I’m glad he did, because that baseball game was hilarious. I’m sad that it only lasted half an episode.
What made the whole situation funny was the unorthodox way in which the game was handled. The rules and mechanics of the game were still the same. It was just the little touches that were ridiculous.
The one that got me the most were the little blurbs underneath the batters when they came up to the plate. Usually these effects are meant to introduce the hitters stats, hometown, previous school or achievements. Jujutsu Kaisen used them to broadcast some ridiculous information.
Did you know that Panda wants to punch a Zebra someday? Someone stole Miwa’s mango. Kamo is practicing cursive and can even write his own name now. Nobara is waiting for approval for a credit card. Everyone’s got something ridiculous.
With all of the silliness that comes with the baseball game, you forget that Mahito was able to get away with everything that he wanted. The curses managed to get all six of Sukuna’s fingers and something called “Cursed Wombs: Death Paintings” one through three. I don’t know what these do but they’re special grade cursed objects so they must be powerful.
We also learn that the plan is to try and seal Gojo Satoru on October 31st. I don’t know how successful the curses and curse users will be at doing this considering how powerful Satoru is, but they’ll at least give it a try. There are some interesting things coming up for Jujutsu Kaisen!
Is Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 21 Worth Watching?
Yes. Jujutsu Kaisen episode 21 is worth watching. I guess if you’re not in the mood for humor then you’ll probably want to skip this episode but you’ll be missing out. I found myself holding back audible laughter at a couple moments in this one. I don’t want to spoil too much of the baseball game because I really think you should go see it yourself.
Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 22 Preview
From the preview at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen episode 21 it appears that the cursed items that were stolen from Jujutsu High are already being used. It looks like three young men have become the targets of the curses. My guess is that they’re the unfortunate targets for Mahito to experiment on. Itadori, Fushiguro and Nobara are going to be mixed up in everything as well. It appears as if the blood and guts is going to reappear in episode 22 so it’ll have a completely different feel. From the very ending of the preview we can expect to see Fushiguro come into contact with some kind of evil. I’m going to go ahead and guess that it’s one of the mutated boys from earlier.
Now go watch some anime!
