Kingdom Season 1 Episode 10 Review

Kingdom season 1 episode 10 is tense, and considering that’s the feeling that the anime is going for I’d say it did a good job. While I was watching events unfold, I kept thinking to myself “When is the fighting going to start?” Thankfully it didn’t take too long.

Kingdom Season 1 Episode 9 Review

How well did episode 10 do in telling it’s story?

Overall I can’t complain about how things turned out in Kingdom season 1 episode 10. Zheng’s plan is revealed. There seems to be enough of a chance of its success that you don’t dismiss it right away. Xin shines in combat and you really think that he’s got a bright future ahead of him. I can’t say that I found anything to complain about.

Kingdom did a really good job of telling a story of a city and royal court under a high level of stress. Even before they were mentioned, the men mingling around in black clothes caught my attention. They were there to arrest anyone who uttered one word of dissent against the court or spread one rumor. That just tells you how precarious Cheng Jiao’s uprising really is.

What did Kingdom season 1 episode 10 get right?

Besides what I just mentioned about the story, I think Kingdom season 1 episode 10 did a good job of telling its story in a way that’s easy to follow. Xin is a useful tool in this. Because Xin is dense, he needs everything explained to him. Sometimes in anime this means having a character that’s so stupid that you can’t stand them.

That’s not the case here in Kingdom season 1 episode 10. Xin just vocalizes what we’re all thinking. How is a force of 3,000 going to defeat an army of 80,000? Who are those guys in the black patrolling the crowd? What’s going to happen when they try to confiscate our weapons? Zheng has an answer for all of it but he needs the question asked first.

What did episode 10 get wrong?

There have been some episodes in this season that have made me forget that the entire anime was made using CGI. Kingdom season 1 episode 10 was not one of them. I was painfully aware that Kingdom uses my least favorite type of animation. To me, it took away some of the impact of the episode.

Where I think this was most evident was during the battle at the gate leading into the royal court. I was just disappointed. All this tension had been built up and then the blow-off was less than what I was expecting. I could only watch the fight and think “How much better would this be if it was animated in the normal way?”

Is Kingdom season 1 episode 10 worth watching?

I think that Kingdom season 1 episode 10 is worth watching. The CGI isn’t bad enough that it would make me tell you to run away from this episode. The most important part of any anime is telling a good story and thankfully, Kingdom does a good job of this. As long as that keeps up then I’ll stick with it. If things start to get weird then I’ll have to find something else to watch.

Now go watch some anime!
