For a minute there I thought that all of Subaru’s planning would go to waste as the White Whale was not going to show up.
It looks like Rem’s pep talk from an episode ago finally has Subaru in the right state of mind to figure out a way he can help Emilia without trying to put everything on himself. Subaru has tried to act like he’s some kind of overpowered hero and save the world himself. All that’s gotten for him are a slew of horrific deaths and a head full of horrible memories. You have to recognize your strengths and weaknesses and try to plan accordingly.
What this means for Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World is that Subaru is going to try his hand at negotiations. This isn’t the begging for help thing that he did before. Subaru is going to attempt real negotiations after doing his homework. Considering he has a wealth of knowledge from his previous lives, Subaru is starting from an advantageous position.
I like this. I’m glad to see that Subaru has turned a corner thanks to Rem and now has a better outlook on how he can help. He’s finally starting to put pieces together to orchestrate things in his favor rather than just following whatever he desires in the moment. It feels like the anime has made a 180 degree turn. It’s had me start to wonder why Subaru hasn’t chosen Rem to be the girl that deserves his affection.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 19 has sparked a new sense of optimism in me that had gone out after Subaru’s latest failures. Frankly I was starting to wonder exactly how the anime would pull itself out of its depressing narrative. If it didn’t, I was prepared to not continue on the season 2 even though I’ve thoroughly praised it so far. I just don’t want to watch a completely depressing anime series.
I can take stories that don’t have happy endings. I just recently watched Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal again and that OVA is pretty sad throughout. It also is one of my favorite OVA’s of all time. Anime doesn’t have to have a happy ending in order to be good, but at the rate that Subaru was going I was about to get to the point where I didn’t want to see anymore. I guess you could say it was his outburst at Emilia and some of the other female characters.
We’re past that now, thankfully. It’s time to watch a fight with the White Whale. For once it seems like everything is going according to plan with Subaru leading a small army to the location where the White Whale is going to show up. We’ll just have to see if they can bring it down. I’m not convinced that this will be the only time that these preparations will have to be made. I can see Subaru dying a couple times before Ahab gets his revenge.
Is Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Episode 19 Worth Watching?
Yes. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 19 is worth watching. The highlight of the episode was listening to Subaru’s phone alarm going off at the end of the episode and providing a soundtrack to the White Whale’s entrance. It was one of those songs that came with flip phones from back in the day. It provided a little bit of comic relief in a tense situation.
Besides that I was satisfied from start to finish with this episode. It feels like Subaru is finally getting some traction. He might just save Emilia and reconcile with her by the time everything is done with. There’s only one way to find out for sure.
Now go watch some anime!
