I’m going to see if I can get my wife to let me rest my head in her lap now.
The mental stress that Subaru was under in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World episode 8 is unreal. It’s like life is conspiring against him. Subaru is stuck in a time loop where the reset button is his death. He can even remember everything from past lives too, including the pain.
What that means for our goofball protagonist is that he’s going to be put under so much stress that he’s going to crack. That’s exactly what happens in this episode. Thankfully for Subaru, he’s got Emilia there to provide some support.
In trying to put my thoughts and feelings about this episode into words, I keep coming back to the idea that this anime episode just pulled off a masterclass in making me want to care about Subaru and Emilia. I believe that this story was told so well and in such a relatable way that it’d be hard to not get invested.
Subaru is an ordinary teenager who’s both awkward and overly self-confident. He’s constantly waffling between being a little bit annoying to being determined to find the best possible outcome, even if that means having to die again. This allows us to laugh at Subaru’s antics while also not writing him off completely as a joke character.
As an ordinary teenager, Subaru’s ability to cope with his situation deteriorates rapidly. I think just about anyone can relate to how difficult it is to feel alone while facing an issue. For Subaru, his stress manifests in his behavior. He becomes increasingly erratic and goofy as he tries to put on a face that everything is just fine. It’s one of those situations where everyone knows he’s crazy but they can’t do anything to stop him.
At this point I was just wishing that Subaru was going to find some way to share his pain and fear with anyone else. The weight of the situation was drowning him and he needed a lifeline. When Emilia finally gave Subaru a reprieve it gave us a truly emotional moment that I’d rank pretty high on any list of emotional anime moments.
Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World has managed to wipe away any preconceived notions I had about Isekai anime in just eight episodes. This is unlike anything else I’ve experienced in the genre so far and I’m loving it. I need to kick my habit of not wanting to watch things that others have fallen in love with.
